John Kerry acting as key Obama surrogate, fuelling secretary of state buzz
WASHINGTON - John Kerry, the Democratic senator whose patrician ways helped seal his defeat to George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election, is emerging one of Barack Obama's top lieutenants in the U.S. president's battle for re-election.
Kerry's foreign policy gravitas makes him a natural to tout Obama's achievements on everything from ordering the successful hit on 9-11 mastermind Osama bin Laden a year ago to working to topple Libya's Moammar Gadhafi.
The long-serving Massachusetts lawmaker has been the chairman of the powerful Senate foreign relations committee for two years, replacing Joe Biden when he became Obama's vice-president.
But the buzz is building in his home state and beyond that there could be another reason for Kerry's starring role in Obama's re-election bid ? he's a top candidate for secretary of state in a second Obama term if Hillary Clinton indeed makes good on her stated intention to vacate the post.
In a March 2011 interview, Clinton said she had no desire to keep the job if Obama wins re-election. She reiterated in January she would not remain at the State Department and, in fact, is finished with government after this presidential term.
"I have made it clear that I will certainly stay on until the president nominates someone and that transition can occur," said Clinton, who has been lauded for her stint in the job by Democrats and Republicans alike.
"But I think after 20 years, and it will be 20 years of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am."
That's prompted the type of wild speculation in the U.S. capital second only to the chatter about Mitt Romney's looming choice of running mate. Will it be Kerry? Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations? What about Thomas Donilon, Obama's trusted national security adviser?
Kerry certainly seemed to be playing the part this weekend in Afghanistan as he met with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul.
The senator called a draft Afghan-U.S. strategic partnership agreement a "major success." The pact establishes U.S. support in Afghanistan for a decade after the withdrawal of combat troops.
In a recent interview with Politco.com, Kerry dismissed suggestions he has his eye on the State Department even though he was said to be disappointed when he was passed over for the job in favour of Clinton four years ago.
"People waste a lot of time playing games with speculation around here. I'm not going to engage in it," Kerry said when asked if he was interested in the most powerful cabinet post in U.S. government.
"I'm not thinking about it. I'm going to run for re-election (in 2014) and I'm very happy doing what I'm doing."
But not only has the 68-year-old senator been recruited by the Obama re-election team to herald the president's record on foreign policy and national security matters, but strategists also reportedly believe the well-heeled Massachusetts lawmaker is an effective foil to yet another monied politician from the same state ? Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential front-runner.
Right down to their camera-ready shocks of salt-and-pepper hair, there's no shortage of similarities between Kerry and Romney: both are wealthy, enjoyed privileged upbringings, are Harvard-educated and possess often painfully awkward campaigning styles. Kerry had serious problems connecting with voters in 2004; so too does Romney in 2012.
It's clear the Obama campaign plans to play hardball on the president's foreign policy achievements, particularly the death of bin Laden. And the man who once chided Bush for failing to capture the notorious terrorist at Tora Bora right after the terrorist attacks of 2001 isn't likely to object.
"He took his eye off the ball, off of Osama bin Laden," Kerry said of Bush during a presidential debate shortly before the 2004 election.
In a new ad with former president Bill Clinton front and centre, the Obama campaign is suggesting that bin Laden might be alive today if Mitt Romney had been president last spring.
Romney was dismissive of that line of attack, saying Monday that he would certainly have ordered a similar hit in Obama's situation.
"Of course," he said in New Hampshire. "Even Jimmy Carter would have given that order."
Kerry, for his part, has begun to direct some barbs at Romney in recent weeks. He told the New York Times that Romney was playing into "Iranian hands" when he predicted Iran would get a nuclear weapon if Obama won a second term.
Romney, Kerry later added on the floor of the Senate, should play by the rules of "honest debate."
"He should be armed with facts instead of empty rhetoric," he said. "If we are to succeed ... in order to avoid a nuclear Iran, then at some point we must all act like statesmen, not candidates."

BBC's Planet Earth returns as a live simulcast next week -- but not in the US (video) (Update)
For fans of HD and / or nature documentaries, the BBC Planet Earth series is the unquestioned champion, and to provide a proper followup the Brits are improving it the only way they know how: doing it live. What the broadcaster calls its "most ambitions global wildlife series ever" will air simultaneously in 140 countries (more on that bit later) starting Sunday May 6th, then every Thursday and Sunday for three weeks. The plan is to track animals in seven different locations around the world in real time as they struggle for survival and broadcast it all in HD. One segment features Top Gear's Richard Hammond following a pride of lions across southern Kenya, while another will track black bears in Minnesota. The bad news? If you're in the US or Canada you're not on that 140 country list and won't be seeing any of this live. We're not sure if there's time to make this a campaign issue in the 2012 presidential election but we figure that, or at least bugging BBC America (while we're on the subject -- where's our global iPlayer?) is worth a try. Check after the break for a press release with all the details on where and when it is airing, as well as a trailer.
Update: While we won't be getting the live simulcast, BBC's Paul Deane dropped in a comment below noting it will air the next day on National Geographic Wild retitled as 24/7 Wild. We haven't located a program description yet, but there's already listings in the schedule starting May 7th -- schedule your DVRs accordingly.

Potent protein heals wounds, boosts immunity and protects from cancer
ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? Lactoferrin is an important iron-binding protein with many health benefits.? The major form of this powerful protein, is secreted into human biofluids (e.g. milk, blood, tears, saliva), and is responsible for most of the host-defense properties. Because of the many beneficial activities associated with it, researchers are starting to use lactoferrin as a potential therapeutic protein. And, in contrast to many other therapeutic proteins, which need to be injected into patients, lactoferrin can be orally active. Lactoferrin is the subject of the upcoming June issue of the journal Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
"We now know that lactoferrin is a protein that has many functions in innate immunity and that it plays a role in protecting us from bacterial, viral, fungal, and protozoal infections. It can even protect us from some forms of cancer," says special issue guest editor Dr. Hans Vogel, a professor at the University of Calgary. "Some people describe this protein as the 'Swiss army knife' of the human host defense system. In part it does all this by binding iron, but many other properties of the protein contribute to its function."
This special issue comprises 27 articles and review papers contributed by leading international researchers. The role of lactoferrin on skin wound healing; impacts of lactoferrin on small intestinal growth and development during early life; and use of bovine lactoferrin on the inhibition of influenza and in the prevention of preterm delivery associated with sterile inflammation are among the studies presented.
One important contribution, already published online, is from a Chinese research group led by Professor Ning Li in Beijing. It shows that consumption of milk containing increased levels of the lactoferrin protein modulates the composition of the gut microflora, which in turn promotes health. This research relies on extensive biochemistry and molecular biology to produce the protein and to analyze the changes in the composition of the gut flora. While the article describes an animal model study, the results can probably be extended to humans.

A For Profit Event Business? For SHAME! ? All Out Events ...
That's a lotta money. Too bad it's just to pay the bills . . .
Last weekend, the inaugural SLO Marathon ran through town (literally). Hosted by Get Off the Couch, Potato (not us, I know, you always ask), it was a very successful event. They also spent a huge amount of money putting it on. From road closures (done with hired people ? amazing! We just torture our friends!) to?gorgeous?venue buildout . . . there was no expense spared on the actual day, much less the marketing efforts leading up to the event.
So, as I was reading the local coverage of the marathon online, I got to the comments, curious to see what they would say. And there it was. My eyes widened and whatever else was going on screeched to a halt:
?They?re just money grubbers doing this FOR PROFIT.?
So, dear readers, I?ve got to ask you . . . why do you think a professional production, drawing thousands of people, closing down half of town, needs to be done by a non-profit? Yes, we all think about Livestrong and the Cancer Foundation and . . . whatever else. But, well, did it ever occur to you that someone makes some money off that, somewhere?
Let?s start with a non-profit putting on a race. If it?s a small non-profit, it?s likely a team of volunteer supporters and if you?re expecting things to look awesome and run smoothly, well, good luck. Those people have other stuff to do. Larger non-profits may say they?re putting it on, but this is the truth: THEY HIRED SOMEONE TO PUT THAT EVENT ON. I know, gasp. Maybe the team works internally, maybe it?s contracted out, but if you want your shirts there on time, with well designed prizes, a fancy website, and efficient course marking and registration, baby, you have to hire a professional.
I have no idea why people don?t raise a big stink when a pastor takes home millions off of a congregation . . . that?s a non-profit corporation paying him or her the big bucks. Why aren?t you demanding all the folks working down at the big alternative grocery store do that for free? After all, isn?t it about community and personal satisfaction?
All Out Events is also a for-profit business. The funny thing is that in all the years, in all of the years Y has had an event business (even when it wasn?t All Out), the total take home for a full time job hasn?t even come out to minimum wage. And yet, we?re villified for trying to become professional at this? What kind of a racket is that?
Of course, while we?re at it, all of our events do?benefit a non-profit. And, while other companies claim to benefit a non-profit, then demand a certain sum to take home to feed the dog, our deal is that no matter what, the non-profit takes home a percent of our net profit. You know, that same profit we use to put the event on, and the next one. And sometimes writing that check hurts; hurts a lot. When our day of staff take home more than we do for months and months of work and fear, we sleep at night knowing that when we claim to benefit a non-profit, we do it.
Now, why is it some sort of obligation to do so, though? I like that it?s built into our corporate culture to always give back, but when you put on an event, you?re already giving something back to your community in the tourists you bring, the dollars they spend, the feeling your participants take home at the end of the day, and the money in your employees? pockets.
So, next time you hear about an event, maybe you?ll think twice about that knee jerk question that?s laden with judgment, ?What?s it benefit??
