Quote of the Moment: 'PC gaming press is discovering what to cover'

PressAnd they're mumbling and grumbling the whole way too. During an interview with [a]list daily, A Bit Lucky CEO Frederic Descamps said that "hardcore" games and social games are merging as more complexity and depth is introduced to Facebook games. However, the company's (which just launched hardcore Facebook game Lucky Space) CCO Jordan Maynard alluded to social gaming's effect on games media too.

"I think the PC gaming press is discovering what to cover," Maynard said to [a]list daily. "While initially there was a lot of rejection of the F2P space, games like League of Legends are making them rethink that. Facebook is on your PC so it is sort of PC gaming, but they didn't want to believe it."

And perhaps Maynard has a point: It's only recently that most traditional video game news outlets began to cover the social game scene. And even then it's been generally limited to Zynga and Playfish's efforts. Does this mean that Facebook games have "arrived"? Well, social games can only go up from here, one would guess.

As the two disparate game genres continue to close the gap, surely they'll garner even more attention from mainstream PC gaming press. But it makes you wonder: Do Facebook games even need to be legitimized by big time press outlets?

Well, do they? Are you happy with the possibility that hardcore games and social games are slowly becoming more similar? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

UFC 139?s Three* Stars: Henderson, Rua, Silva and McDonald

UFC 139?s Three* Stars: Henderson, Rua, Silva and McDonald

More than a day has passed since UFC 139 ended, and it's still running through my mind. I watched the NFL all Sunday, and I still couldn't stop thinking about the Henderson/Rua main event, Wanderlei Silva's unlikely win, and every other great performance that helped create such a memorable event. Below are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Dan Henderson: His walkout shirt read "Hearts and minds overcome all," and it turned out to be an indicator of the kind of main event that would happen at UFC 139. Henderson came out hard and seemed close to finishing off Rua early on, but used every bit of heart to survive in the later rounds as Rua dominated. Henderson extended his win streak to four, earned a title shot of some sort, and a $70,000 bonus. Not too shabby for a 41-year-old.

UFC 139?s Three* Stars: Henderson, Rua, Silva and McDonaldNo. 1a star -- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua: The other half of Henderson's amazing fight deserves as much recognition as Henderson. He withstood punches that have knocked out Fedor Emelianenko, Rafael Cavalcante, and Michael Bisping. With his face bloody and swollen, Rua engineered a comeback that fell just shy of a win in the eyes of the judges.

No. 2 star -- Wanderlei Silva: A bit of magic abounds when Silva hits the cage looking like his vintage self. He showed why he has the nickname "The Axe Murderer" as he withstood Cung Le's kicks, and then earned the TKO in the second round. There is no guarantee that we will get to see much more of him in the Octagon as he has taken much punishment over his 15-year MMA career. Instead of worrying about what's next for him, let's just enjoy that his magic was present in San Jose on Saturday.

No. 3 star -- Michael McDonald: He's 20, he has unlimited potential, and he has another memorable win under his belt. McDonald's knockout left Alex Soto with a very short UFC debut, and earned McDonald a $70,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. That's a record of 14-1 for McDonald before he even becomes old enough to drink after his American fights.

*Yep, that's actually four stars.

Bruce Springsteen announces 2012 world tour (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Bruce Springsteen will go on tour next year for the first time in three years, starting with European dates in May and the United States and others to follow, according to the rock star's website.

Springsteen's E Street Band tour will be his first since the June death of saxophone player Clarence Clemons, who suffered a stroke and died six days later at age 69.

"A lot of you have been hearing that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be on tour in 2012. That is absolutely correct," the website said.

The European dates for Springsteen's first tour since 2009 run from mid-May through late July. Sunderland, Manchester and the Isle of Wight were confirmed for June 21, 22 and 24.

He is also set to appear on July 14 at the Hard Rock Calling music festival in Hyde Park in central London.

The dates for the U.S. leg and locations will be announced soon.

Springsteen played a pair of concerts in Pittsburgh earlier this month with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, as well as several benefits, including one last month at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park in his home state New Jersey.

"It's great to welcome Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band back to the UK," Toby Leighton-Pope, vice president of promotions for concert and live-event company Live Nation, said in a statement.

"They always put on a fantastic show," he added.

UFC 139 domination: Faber fabulous in earning another shot against Cruz

UFC 139 domination: Faber fabulous in earning another shot against Cruz

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Urijah Faber was tired of hearing he didn't deserve an immediate rematch against Dominick Cruz for his UFC bantamweight title, so he took matters into his own hands and laid some lumber on Brian Bowles.

Faber crushed Bowles with an uppercut in the second. The Georgia native was stunned and eventually found himself on his back after Faber nailed him with a knee in close quarters. Faber went into overdrive on the ground. Bowles couldn't fend him off. Faber eventually got control of Bowles' head and locked him on a mean guillotine choke to get the submission victory at 1:27 of the second round at UFC 139 in the HP Pavilion.

Just seconds after the fight was finished, Faber (26-5, 2-1 UFC) immediately turned his attention to his nemesis Cruz.

"Dominick, you can run but you can't hide. Throw some gel in that widow's peak and let's do some work. Let's battle," Faber said.

Faber and Cruz brawled for five hard rounds at UFC 132. Cruz won via unanimous decision, but Faber believes the judges blew it. Before Saturday's fight, he admitted he needs to play to the judges more to get a win against Cruz, who is a whirling dervish that wins over MMA judges with his high-volume style.

Tonight, Faber showed some stones trading shots with the heavy-handed Bowles throughout the first. Bowles' lone path to victory was probably landing a big right hand. Faber's movement, fakes and speed threw Bowles off. He wasn't aggressive.

In the second, Faber took advantage of a very flat-footed Bowles. The 5-foot-6 Faber covered roughly five feet of space in a split second and landed the huge uppercut.

"I feel really good man. I feel great. I came out looking for the win and get a big finish like that. I think Brian Bowles is a warrior. I like that guy a lot. I had a general game plan going out there but I had to be ready. I'm sad for him but I'm really stoked for me right now," Faber said.

Bowles simply couldn't recover from the bomb landed by Faber.

"It was a tough fight, there isn't really much I can say about it. I went out there and I just really never got in my groove. Took a big punch, got rocked. He gave me a couple pounds on the ground and I didn't recover. I was rattled when he got the choke and I just never got back," Bowles said.

Security fears keep Nigeria president from home state vote (Reuters)

YENAGOA, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Security fears kept Nigeria's president from attending his party's gubernatorial primary on Saturday in his home state that has been tainted by an escalating row over the incumbent governor's exclusion from running.

Security was unusually tight for a local vote in the oil-producing state of Bayelsa, where political violence involving armed gangs has in the past had an impact on energy infrastructure in a key region for Africa's largest crude oil export business.

Goodluck Jonathan was expected to be back in his home region as the special guest but the heightened security risks kept him hundreds of miles north in the capital Abuja, his office said.

Helicopters swooped overhead and hundreds of armed soldiers guarded the streets of the state capital Yenagoa as delegates voted overwhelmingly for Henry Dickson as the PDP candidate in the Bayelsa governorship election in February next year.

Dickson won 365 of 384 votes cast.

He is a member of the national assembly and will now be favorite to become the next governor of Bayelsa, something most Nigerians would not have believed a week ago.

The PDP on November 13 listed sitting governor Timipre Sylva as one of four people who failed to get through a screening process to stand in Saturday's vote, the first time an incumbent PDP governor has been excluded from running for re-election in the party's primary.

Sylva and his supporters cried foul and won a court injunction last week delaying the vote until the PDP explained to the high court in Abuja why the sitting governor had been disqualified, but the party went ahead anyway.

Two candidates walked out of the primary saying the vote was not valid because of the court injunction and the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). INEC said it did not attend because of the court order.

Western diplomats and PDP sources said Sylva had made enemies at the very top of the party. Jonathan and Sylva are from the same area but the president has not spoken about his exclusion.

State governors are among the most powerful politicians in Nigeria, wielding influence over national policy and in some cases controlling budgets larger than small African nations.

The PDP is dominant in southern states and the incumbent governor is usually the firm favorite to win re-election.

Nigeria held nationwide presidential, local and gubernatorial elections in April that international observers said were the fairest since the end of military rule in 1999.

They were also some of the bloodiest as post-election violence left hundreds dead.

Five state governorship votes were delayed until 2012 because the incumbents had another year left on their tenure.

Bayelsa, one of three states in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta, is a volatile region, where oil theft, pipeline sabotage and kidnappings are common.

Pirates hijacked three ships in the waters around Bayelsa and took five people hostage on Friday, elevating fears that the political wrangling could lead to unrest.

Jonathan was Bayelsa state governor before becoming vice president in 2007.
