(AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who was suddenly allowed to leave the country arrived in the U.S. on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng had been hurriedly taken from a hospital hours earlier and put on a plane for the United States after Chinese authorities suddenly told him to pack and prepare to leave. He arrived Saturday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport ? and out of view of the scores of journalists and supporters who gathered to greet him. He then headed to New York City.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

"I'm very happy at the news that he's on his way and I look forward to welcoming him and his family tonight and to working with him on his course of study," Cohen said.

Chen and his family will live in an apartment at the Washington Square Village complex, a New York University housing facility where faculty and graduate students reside, an NYU spokesman said.

Before he left China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."

Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."

Here's how you get a piece of Facebook

Facebook will make its much-hyped debut on Wall Street Friday morning, and it's shaping up to be one of the largest IPOs ever, with analysts predicting the social network will be valued at more than $100 billion. TODAY's Savannah Guthrie takes a look at whether the stock will live up to the hype.

By Roland Jones

Excitement for Facebook?s debut on the financial markets is high. So if you?re an individual investor, can you get a piece of the action, and should you?

The first thing to remember about IPOs is that they are not normally geared toward individual investors. Underwriting banks typically allocate IPO shares to their best clients, which include hedge funds, wealthy individuals and large institutional investors. These investors will get the right to buy a certain number of shares at the offering price, which Facebook set at $38 per share Thursday afternoon. (You can track the performance of Facebook?s stock price here).

Some smaller retail investors may get a few shares allocated, especially if they have a good relationship with a broker for one of the dozens of underwriting firms handling the transaction.

If you have not already been in touch with your broker, however, it is too late to even try get in at the offering price. The deadline to express interest was Tuesday afternoon at brokerages we checked with, and the deal reportedly is oversubscribed.

Your only option is to buy shares after they begin trading on the Nasdaq stock market, when the price will be set by the law of supply and demand.

?This is not a strategy for the faint of heart,??said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany, N.Y.?Intense?interest in Facebook?s offering is likely to drive the price up sharply as soon as trading begins, meaning the first public trade could be well above the offering price.

Related: Facebook set for stock market debut

In an example of the type of pressure investors could face, LinkedIn, another social media company, went public almost exactly a year ago at $45 a share and closed at $94 on a volatile first day of trading that saw its shares top $122 at one point.

That means investors lucky enough to get in at the offering price were able to book an immediate paper profit of more than 100 percent or?"flip" shares and cash in. Other investors paid as much as $122 a share for LinkedIn that day and were left with paper losses. (LinkedIn shares currently trade for about $103.)?

Facebook could easily see a similar first-day trajectory, but it is impossible to know. Online investors who place a general order for Facebook stock will get shares at whatever price happens to be prevailing at the moment.

?Is it a sound investment for a sensible portfolio? No," said Johnson. "Is it a worthwhile speculative investment? Sure, but you have to be fully prepared for something that could be a very emotional event. And I have the sense that [the IPO price] could be very overvalued.?

One good piece of news about Facebook?s IPO is there are plenty of shares up for grabs.

In a sign of intense investor interest, Facebook said early investors in the company will be selling more of their shares in the IPO, bringing the total number of shares available to as many as 421.2 million, up from a previous maximum of 337.4 million.

Still, despite the increased number of shares on offer, the hype and interest surrounding Facebook?s IPO are precisely why investors should be cautious about investing in the company, said Professor Anant Sundaram of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

?My concern is the market is pricing [Facebook] to perfection ? and the kind of fundamentals that are premised in that valuation, growth and revenues and cash flows, are simply astronomical,? he told CNBC Wednesday. ?Now it?s possible they could achieve that, but I think the probability is low.?

Sundaram also says the fact that founder Mark Zuckerberg will control more than 50 percent of the company?s voting rights after it goes public is ?very, very troubling.?

While a handful of new technology companies, such as Google, have thrived under the tight control of their founders, the stock ownership structure at Facebook limits the ability of shareholders to take action if things go wrong.?He?said evidence shows tightly controlled companies are more likely to wasteful acquisitions, overpay employees and spend unnecessarily on capital expenditures.

Other technology companies, such as Microsoft and Apple, have fared well without that sort of governance structure, Sundaram said.?

?Basically, as investors we are being asked to liquefy and validate a lot of insider wealth, and being told to sit and zip your lips in the peanut gallery,? he said.

While Facebook is expected to get a big opening-day ?pop,? Kathleen Shelton Smith, co-founder and chairman of IPO research company Renaissance Capital says it?s more important to track what Facebook?s stock price will be a week or a month after its initial trading day.

?For an IPO to work it has to trade higher over time after the initial trading day, and not all of them do,? said Smith. ?So the challenge for the underwriters is to price the IPO where it can move higher over time.?

CNBC's Kayla Tausche reports Facebook's IPO is expected to be priced in the $34 to $38 range after the market closes today.

?The question is, over time will the company deliver the kind of performance that justifies its price? Every investor studying this company wants to work that out.?

For individual investors, it is worth remembering that Facebook shares will be available on Nasdaq for the foreseeable future. Would-be investors can wait a day or two and buy shares when the price is less volatile.

For investors interested in IPOs, but unable to purchase them directly, Smith suggests investing in a mutual fund that track the IPO market, such as the Direxion Long/Short Global IPO Fund (ticker:?DXIIX) or the Renaissance Global IPO Plus Aftermarket Fund (ticker:?IPOSX).

Investing in these funds might even be a smarter play than buying Facebook shares directly. Sundaram said there are many reasons to expect Facebook shares to fall after their opening day.

He pointed to similar technology companies such as?Zynga, which have seen their share prices fall after the expiration of "lockups" that prevent company insiders and major investors from selling for at least 90 days after a stock is first publicly traded.

If Facebook shares manage to hold their value??that would be a remarkable achievement in my book,? he said.

Bing Launches Its Paid Search API, But Will Still Offer A Free Tier

bing_logo_2Just about a month ago, Microsoft announced that it would end free access to its Bing Search API and start charging a minimum of $40 per month for the service. Today, the company is officially launching the Bing Search API on its Windows Azure Marketplace, but unlike its previous announcement, the company has decided to continue to offer a free tier as well. Developers will still be able to make up to 5,000 queries per month for free. This, says the Bing team, will still allow most existing developers to use the service for free.

Raspberry Ketones Sold Out in Health Stores But Still Available ...

Raspberry ketones have been approved as safe by the U.S. FDA since 1965 and have been used in food to improve taste naturally, but in the last 10 years the all-natural extract of real raspberries has been found to have weight loss effects and energy increase effects. Scientific studies had proven the raspberry ketones would cause mice to lose weight and the general public has been using the ketones this way for 10 years and reporting great results.

Since being advertised on Fox News, raspberry ketones have been selling out in health food stores around the United States, so a British company is now shipping the all-natural health and weight loss supplement to the United States.

Studies show that it is necessary to take at least 100mg each day of raspberry ketones in order to gain the fat-burning effect. The ketone supplement sold at Slimmers Expert online has this amount of the all-natural weight loss supplement, compared to many ketones on the market which have less than that.

The staff at Slimmers Expert helps people in both Great Britain, the United States and Canada with keeping a supply of the raspberry ketones, which are usually sold out in health food stores.

Russian plane goes missing in Indonesia, dealing blow to aviation industry (+video)

The late-model Russian Sukhoi SuperJet-100 was meant to revive Russia's aging and accident-prone airplane fleet. It disappeared on a demonstration flight.

In what is likely to be a terrible blow for Russia's struggling aviation industry, a Sukhoi SuperJet-100,?the first completely new post-Soviet jetliner, went missing during a promotional tour in Indonesia.

The plane is?presumed crashed, although Russia's official RIA-Novosti agency said that darkness and fog have prevented search teams from reaching the site where the plane is believed to have gone down during a demonstration flight near Mt. Salak, about 50 miles from Jakarta.

The SuperJet, a half-dozen copies of which are already serving with two Russian airlines, is supposed to replace the fleets of aging Soviet-era Tupolev, Antonov, and Yakovlev mid-range aircraft that serve hundreds of far-flung regional routes across Russia and which have?suffered a rash of catastrophic accidents in recent years.?The situation became so bad last year that then-President Dmitry Medvedev ordered two regional workhorses, the Tupolev Tu-134 and the Antonov An-24,?to be permanently grounded.

Great hopes have been invested in the SuperJet, which was developed by Russia's famous producer of fighter planes,?Sukhoi, with input from several top Western aviation firms, including Boeing, Snecma, and Honeywell. The plane meets all the latest global aviation standards, and production models should be able to carry almost 100 passengers with an operating range of up to 2,500 miles, which makes it an ideal replacement for a wide range of?troubled Soviet aircraft?on Russia's multitude of outback routes.

There are also high hopes that the plane might do well on international markets, particularly in Asia, where its $35 million price tag makes it a tough competitor for similar-sized jets produced by the Canadian Bombardier Inc. and the Brazilian Embraer SA.

The SuperJet, which has sailed through testing and certification, has also been relatively accident-free in its development stages. The only serious mishap so far occurred in March, when a SuperJet operated by Aeroflot was forced to abandon a flight from Moscow to the Caspian city of Astrakhan due to problems with its undercarriage. Airline officials said passengers were never in danger.

But Russia's airline industry has been hit with a series of scandals, including revelations that many engineers working in aircraft factories have inadequate or fake diplomas.?

Many Russians can recall, often with a shudder, how a catastrophic crash of the Soviet Union's "Concordski" Tu-144 supersonic jetliner?at the Paris air show in 1973?destroyed the USSR's reputation as a worthy competitor of the West in aviation. All eyes will be on the investigation into today's SuperJet disappearance, and everyone will be hoping it does not reveal fundamental flaws in the plane's design.?

Some reports said there were 44 people on board, others 50, including its eight-member Russian crew. Many of the passengers were aviation journalists and representatives of Asian airline companies that have been considering purchases of the new aircraft. The plane had previously visited Myanmar, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. After Jakarta it was supposed to go to Laos and Vietnam.

International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer

Authors suggest it could help in preoperative diagnosis along with other methods

DENVER The most recent research released in June's Journal of Thoracic Oncology says molecular biomarkers in the tissue and fluid lining the lungs might be an additional predictive technique for lung cancer screening.

Since the National Lung Screening Trial found that 96.4 percent of the positive CT screening results were false positive, scientists have been looking for ways to more accurately diagnose patients. This research focused on a way to determine if the nodules detected by the CT screening, are in fact malignant or benign.

The study presented in the June 2012 issue of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer's (IASLC) Journal of Thoracic Oncology collected endobronchial epithelial-lining fluid (ELF) near a lung nodule using bronchoscopic microsampling, which is a less invasive procedure compared to surgery.

After studying 142 ELF samples from 71 patients with pulmonary nodules, some cancerous, others non cancerous, the authors conclude that, "TNC (tenasin-C) gene expression and the nodule size are two independent factors that improved the prediction of lung cancer. However this finding has to be verified in larger cohorts."

The authors point out that in previous research, "tumor markers like CEA and CYFRA were found to be in higher abundance in ELF close to the small peripheral lung carcinoma when compared to the contralateral site or benign cases."

Justin Bieber, Saturday Night Live Celebrate 100 Digital Shorts

Justin Bieber helped Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone celebrate their 100th Digital Short this weekend on Saturday Night Live, but the teenager immediately regretted doing so after he learned just how the pair planned on touting the feat.

"Tonight we are celebrating our 100th short," Samberg sings in the following video. "Congratulations to us, truly a major milestone. Guess what we're going to do? Tonight, we're gonna suck our own c-ck."

Wait... what?!? Justin responds.

At various points, former Digital Short stars such as Natalie Portman, Michael Bolton and Jon Hamm also showed up.

So did Justin Timberlake, who, of course, is responsible for the most memorable edition of all-time. In case you forgot, we have four words for you: D-ck in a Box.

Host Will Ferrell joined in the festivities as well, concluding the video with: "I do endorse this song. My name is Will Ferrell and I'm sucking my own dong."

It's a Girl for Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky!

Chris Hemsworth may be a key part of the biggest movie on the planet, but his wife truly gave him a reason to celebrate yesterday in London: she gave birth to a baby girl!

Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth

Multiple sources confirm that Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky welcomed their first child together yesterday afternoon, a daughter named India.

Said Pataky in January, not long after going public with the announcement of her pregnancy:

"Having the person that you love by your side, and starting a family with them, is the best thing that can happen to you in this life. You can't ask for more."

By the hammer of Thor, she's right. We send our very best to this new and growing family!
