Now, a little more than a third of the state - and none of the state's four largest metropolitan areas - is suffering from extreme or exceptional drought, according to a survey released last week by the U.S. Drought Monitor. Even non-food items like clothing were pushed up by the dry spell, as much of the state's cotton crop was destroyed. Texas produces 55 percent of the nation's cotton.
"Planting is going on in much of Texas and fields are being prepared, so these rains could really make or break many producers' seasons," Staples said.
That said, the state still remains abnormally dry, and with some lakes dozens of feet below average levels, farmers are just two dry weeks away from parched fields in which crops couldn't germinate, Staples said.
"With such a long season, we need sustained rains, and we need a major rain event to fill up our reservoirs," he said.
Nowhere is the spotty nature of the drought recovery more obvious than in the area west of Austin known as the Highland Lakes, a series of reservoirs on the Colorado River watershed that provide water to millions of residents, businesses and farmers from northwest Texas to the Gulf Coast.
Some of the lakes are near their usual levels, but others remain 40 feet or more lower than this time of year. Residents of Spicewood Beach, on Lake Travis northwest of Austin, are relying on water that is delivered daily by truck, according to Clara Tuma of the Lower Colorado River Authority.
"We expect to bring in four or five tanker truckloads of water per day, and we will continue until the wells fill back up again," she said.
The LCRA last week approved new water management rules that could severely restrict water to rice farms along the Gulf Coast in the event of the return of intense drought.
But wetter weather is expected this spring. April and May should provide more moisture, according to Nielsen-Gammon.
And the colorful Texas wildflowers - all but invisible last year - have begun to sprout. Damon Wiatt, a senior botanist at the University of Texas' Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, said that the recent winter rains should yield a bumper crop of bluebonnets in rural Texas this spring.

Scientists have discovered a new target in their fight against the devastating global disease 'malaria' thanks to the discovery of a new protein involved in the parasite's life cycle.
The research has uncovered a vital player in the sexual phase of the malaria parasite's reproduction which could prove an effective target for new treatments to stop the disease in its tracks.
The scientists from The University of Nottingham's School of Biology, with collaborators from the Universities of Leicester, Oxford, Imperial College London and Leiden in the Netherlands, have just published the results of their work in the journal PLoS Pathogens.

Malaria is a devastating global disease with several hundred million clinical cases and just under a million people die from it every year. The disease is caused by an infection of the red blood cells with a tiny parasite called a Plasmodium, of which there are four important species. These organisms are carried from person to person by the Anopheles mosquito. When it bites an infected person, the mosquito sucks up blood containing the parasite, which may then be passed on to the mosquito's next victim.
Dr David Guttery, lead scientist of the paper and part of Dr Tewari's group from the University of Nottingham's Centre for Genetics and Genomics in the School of Biology said:
"The malaria parasite is a complex organism and to understand how it multiplies is crucial to stopping its transmission. Our study has identified a cell-division cycle gene in the malaria parasite and its role in the development of male sex cells and is hence a good candidate for putting the brakes on its development. We have shown that by deleting this gene, male gametes cannot form and burst out of their host cell (a process called exflagellation). Blocking the formation of these cells can be an important strategy in the prevention of malaria transmission from mosquito to mammalian hosts".

They start with 18 layers of carbon fiber, a plastic film called Kapton, titanium, brass, ceramic, and adhesive sheets that each have a unique laser-cut design. The layers are stacked and aligned using pins and laminated together.?
The design incorporates the Mobee layers into an assembly scaffold that uses a system of 137 hinges and folding joints to assemble the insect into a 3-D shape in a single, popup-book-like movement.?
Once up, the entire device is dipped in a liquid metal solder that selectively bonds to brass pads, locking the bee together and allowing its removal from the quarter coin-sized assembly scaffold. Once removed, connection to an external power source allows Mobee's wings to flap.?
While the technique removes humans and their fat fingers from the assembly process, nimble minds are still required to figure out how all the layers will fit together and fold.
