Being Perfectly Fair About the Limbaugh-Maher Controversy

COMMENTARY | Note to all Dittoheads: I'm actually going to agree with some of you. Whether you believe it or not, I am not actually out to get Rush Limbaugh. In the interest of fairness, I am going to use a suggestion from a Limbaugh supporter and tackle the question of whether Democrats should return any campaign contributions from Bill Maher.

Yes, they should. According to Newsmax, last year Maher used a slur in reference to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. He has also been part of donating money to Democratic campaigns. I watch Maher's show, and if you are going to be a comedian, fine. If you are going to be a political commentator, fine. Pick one. Do not hide under the auspices of being an entertainer to say things that will eventually affect a vote.

Politics should be a fight over ideals. It is sad that name calling is so easily gone to when there is a disagreement over political ideals. According to CNN, the Obama campaign has spent a great deal of money targeting female voters. I wonder how some of those women would feel if they realized the money was coming from somebody who would call them a derogatory slur the instant the individual disagreed with them. Once again, call their ideas stupid.

The New York Daily News reports ratings for Limbaugh's program have gone up despite the controversy. So while Limbaugh and Maher are in the business of saying controversial things, money they make shouldn't be going to any candidate. Or at least they shouldn't accept it.

When it comes down to the moment the American public has to put its mark on a ballot, one question might be on its mind. What is the company this candidate kept and did the money for all those balloons and bumper stickers come from the same place? Based on what we have seen out of the two, no candidate should accept money from Maher or Limbaugh.
