Gaming Regulators Approve Sports Betting Smart Phone App

LAS VEGAS - The control room at American Wagering is sportsbook central. All bets are managed there, whether they come from Leroy's Sportsbooks, a kiosk at PT's Pub or now an iPhone.

"You now have a legal sports betting app that can be used here in the state of Nevada," said American Wagering Senior Vice President John English.

English's company has released the nation's first mobile sports betting app on the iPhone.

"It's true convenience," he said. "The sportsbooks will always be a social environment. That's where everybody really wants to be when the game's on. But, there are some times when people can't make it to the book or to a place to get their bets down."

To get started, you need to fill out an application with Leroy's Sportsbooks and put at least $100 on your account.

Download the app, and with just a few taps on the screen, you can place your bets.

"You can see all the various sports you can choose from," English said. "I'm going to select a bet of ten dollars, and accept that and submit."

Virtually everything you see at a Las Vegas sportsbook is on your phone. The app helps sports bettors save time.

"Time is money. Just get it out of the way. Do it now. Watch the game," said Chicago visitor Pierre Washington.

Others worry this technology may make it too easy to get in on the action.

"I think that if you can't hold the money in your hand to know what you're losing, it's too easy to lose a large amount of money," said Canadian visitor Bob Allison.

Whether you're a novice wagering two dollars or a high-roller risking tens of thousands, you can bet your bottom dollar sports betting will never be the same.

"You have everything that you need in here - a complete sportsbook right in your pocket," English said.

American Wagering's sports betting apps for the Blackberry and Android have already proven successful. The company is also planning an iPad app.
